Kodi’s Packing Checklist: Essentials for Traveling with your Dog

Traveling with a pup—especially a working dog—takes planning. Here’s what we pack to keep our service dog, Kodi, safe, comfortable, and road-ready.

✅ Documents & ID

  • Current Vaccination Records
Rabies + Bordetella (kennel cough) signed by your vet.

  • ESA or PSA Paperwork + Tags/Vest

    • ESA (Emotional Support Animal): Soothes anxiety, helps with mental health conditions.

    • PSA (Psychiatric Service Animal): Trained to perform a specific task for a disabled person.

  • Microchip Info
Double-check that it’s registered with your current contact details.

  • Service Tags/Collar ID
Include rabies tag, contact tag, and GPS tracker if using.

🥣 Food & Treats

  • Kibble + Freeze-Dried Raw or Fresh Pet
(Wet food like Farmer’s Dog is great but requires freezer space.)

  • Treats & Chews
Stick to dog-safe options to avoid upset tummies.

  • Toys
Bring a couple faves but don’t overpack.

🧳 Gear & Supplies

  • Rubber-Backed Food & Water Bowls
    Won’t slide around the van.

  • Leash + Back-Up Leash

    • Harness if you use one.

  • Wicking Towels
Great for drying off after hikes, rain, or muddy adventures.

  • Poop Bags
Bring more than you think you need.

  • Shampoo + Brush
Keep your pup clean on the go.

  • Water Bottle (Personal)
Use your own or get a pup-specific one with a dispenser.

💊 Health & Meds

  • Flea & Tick Prevention
Monthly treatment or vaccination if your vet offers it.

  • Car-Sickness Remedy
If your dog gets queasy on mountain roads or long rides, low-dose Dramamine.

  • Any Ongoing Meds
Store them with yours in a daily organizer.

🐾 Training & Behavior

  • Refresh Commands Before the Trip
Practice key voice + hand commands:
“Sit,” “Stay,” “Stop,” “Come,” “Cross,” “Wait,” etc.

  • Positive Reinforcement Gear
Small treats or a clicker to reward good road manners.

  • Off-Leash? Only If Fully Trained
Safety first, especially near wildlife or in unfamiliar places.

🚐 Bonus Tips

  • GPS Collar or Tracker
Especially handy in remote or wild areas.

  • Leave No Trace
Always pick up after your dog and be respectful of leash rules—even if your pup is a perfect angel.

Bottom line?
If you’re traveling with your dog; whether they’re a trained service animal or your emotional support BFF…be ready, be respectful, and pack smart.

Your dog deserves a great adventure, too. 🐶✨
