Mount Rainier National Park

Washington

Soaring 14,410 feet above the neighboring Cascade peaks, Mount Rainier is the roof of Washington State. To the Indigenous peoples, Tahoma was — and still is — a mighty source of power and spirit.

The Skyline Loop Trail (paradise area)lived up to the hype: wildflower meadows, sweeping glacier views, and panoramas that feel like you’ve stepped into a postcard. After five and a half miles of climbing and descending, I needed a serious rest. Luckily, we landed at the National Park Inn — clean, cozy rooms, friendly staff, and a restaurant serving hearty comfort food right on site. Highly recommend. Other mentionable trails Naches Peak Loop (Sunrise area) 3.4 mi wildflower meadows. Comet Falls (Paradise Area) Scenic Waterfall hike.

But that’s just one way to crash here:

  • Camping: Cougar Rock, Ohanapecosh (near grove of patriachs), White River (first-come, first-served) Mowich Lake Campground (Carbon River Area) via recreation.gov.

  • In-Park Lodges: Historic Paradise Inn (all rustic beams and jaw-dropping views) or the classic National Park Inn.

  • Nearby Stays: Ashford’s A-frames and cabins, charming B&Bs in Packwood, or Crystal Mountain’s Alpine Inn where you can ride the gondola for sunset drinks.

The park is endless; short strolls, all-day hikes, wildlife spotting, waterfalls, glaciers, and wildflower season that will blow your mind. Just don’t forget: sunrise at Reflection Lake is a must.
